Founded in 2000, The Dukunde Kawa Cooperative (Musasa) cultivates its high-quality coffee near a mountain gorilla habitat in central Rwanda. By producing high-end coffee for the international market and employing a majority female workforce, the cooperative ensures maximum benefits to local families.Rwanda is also known as The Land of a Thousand Hills. This East African country is known for its outstanding coffee produced mainly from Bourbon varieties. Rwanda is one of the small producers in Africa but also one of the highest quality producers.
Eighty percent of Dukunde’s producers are women. Each member has been able to buy a farm animal, and many now have health insurance for the first time. Dukunde Kawa constructed 2 schools in 2006. Also, the cooperative provides members with long-term credit at no interest. Many farmers renovated their homes and now all members’ homes have tile rather than grass roofs.
Rwanda Musasa is a natural process, dried in the cherry. This coffee is also grown organically and a Rain Forest Alliance coffee.
Coffee was first brought to Rwanda by German Missionaries in the early 1900’s.
